More Than 4,000 Apply for Full-Time Wegmans Jobs

The store is scheduled to open Sept. 18.

Getting hired by Harford County's gourmet grocery store may be more like a lottery than an application process.

In an interview with Patch, Wegmans  said more than 4,000 people available in the store, scheduled to open Sept. 18. In July, the store will begin taking applications for 450 part-time positions.

"I’m very encouraged with the caliber and the quality of the candidates," Jackson said. "We’ve been consistently one of the top companies to work for and we’re really proud of that and that’s a testament to our people."

Fortune magazine ranks Wegmans as the No. 3 employer in the country. The store manager said he is in the second round of interviews and expects to begin offering positions within two weeks.

"It’s a very tight community and I think the anticipation of our store for so long has really helped us and gave people time to think about [the opportunity]," Jackson said. "I would say by the middle of May, we’ll start narrowing our selections."

Jackson has worked for Wegmans for almost 23 years after beginning as an assistant deli manager at the company's Buffalo store. Most recently the York, PA, resident worked at the Hunt Valley location.

"We’re very excited to be joining the Harford County community," he said. "We hope that it will be as exciting for people to come shop with us the first day as a year from now. It’s a privilege and a responsibility to serve this community."

Jackson acknowledged that the store is in Abingdon but is being referred to as the Bel Air location.

"Our stores are very regional stores. We don’t have another store four miles away, or just up the road," he said. "When we give the location name of our store, we want to make sure people recognize the region that store is located."
