Let me explain why Jason, in his comments above, has offered horrible advice. I believe in armed self-defense more than most people, but what Jason is suggesting, aiming for the knees, is calmed “maiming” in MD law. Jason’s advice will likely send him, and anyone else who tries it, to prison. This isn’t Hollywood; this is real life in a state which is NOT firearms-friendly. However, MD law allows for lethal self-defense with firearms. If you employ a firearm in self-defense, you had better be in fear for your life and attempt lethal self-defense. If not, an attorney/prosecutor will take your “knee-shooting” action/comment and turn it on you in a hurry. He will make the case that you must not have feared for your life since you only wished to wound the perpetrator. You will likely find yourself on the way to prison and responsible for the robber’s medical bills. Why do the police always shoot to kill and not shoot to wound other than in movies? Because shooting to wound is maiming and it is against the law. If you have the legal justification to use lethal force, it is in your best interest to use it. If you use it, keep your mouth shut until you have an attorney. Remember, everything Hollywood has taught us regarding firearms and self-defense is fiction!

Folks should have voted for Jeff Gahler. Too bad the Deputies Union is running the show...

I am a mother. I work outside the home and my kids are stable and contributing to society in positive ways. There are ways for women to work and raise good kids...consequences and discipline to name two.
kathleen August 21, 2011 at 01:31 AM
Marie - then you are a minority. Let's face it - kids today are for the most part obnoxious, without respect or general concern for others, and without manners. The last time a kid said excuse me or please or thank you to me in a public place was over a year ago! Parents don't punish children anymore.
Marie Weimer August 21, 2011 at 01:40 AM
Kathleen, I do not believe I am in the minority. And, I certainly do not want to come off as June Cleaver, cause I am far from it. However, there are good kids out there and I am lucky that so far, my kids are good kids. Good parents sometimes have kids that turn out not so good. All we can do is instill what we believe into our children and hope for the best. Once they leave the house, it's up to them to forge their own way with what you have given them. Do you have children?
Leroy Smith August 21, 2011 at 02:00 AM
I agree that people need to arm themselves for self defense. However, they should also attend a firearms safety course to know how to use and keep firearms in a safe manner in their homes. Don't become a Wyatt Earp or Annie Oakley. You need to know how to use a gun. You cannot always depend on the police to get to your home in time for an emergency. The police are not your paid bodyguards.
JeffreyB August 21, 2011 at 02:26 AM
You're absolutely right, Frank. Firearms are tools; tools which may save your life, but come with a great deal of responsibility where ownership is concerned.
Lauren August 21, 2011 at 03:12 AM
I have to side with Kathleen on this one folks.... There is no accountability with children nowadays. Parents have become so passive, and let the children do whatever they damn well please! Who exactly is running the show in the household?? And then what happens to these kids when they grow up?! I had fear in my parents growing up, and I turned out for the better. And it is so true that these kids do not have manners anymore. I was at target the other day and I actually complimented the kid working the register for his use of manners...."yes mam," "thank you mam...". I told him it's not often these days that you hear a child speaking to an adult like this! What happened??!!!!
Jason Chilly Edwards August 21, 2011 at 04:31 AM
Jeff I am going to check into that ASAP but I would have a hard time shooting a idiot kid in the head trying to rob me with a knife. Then they are not the one suffering their family is. There is no good answer for any of this, buy my question is what is going to be done to stop this. I have been ready to leave the state for a while.

This Communist state will not allow concealed carry like our neighbors to the north and south; too bad.
James August 21, 2011 at 05:49 AM
JeffreyB: police shoot to stop the threat... not to kill. An attorney would had a field day with that statement.

You're absolutely correct, James. I agree with you 100%. You shoot to stop the threat. My efforts to keep things simple failed me. Thanks.
JeffreyB August 21, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Jason, I understand completely. Thanks for understanding that my comments were not a personal attack on you. I am a very pro-defense person and I'd like to see that those protecting themselves stay out of prison. You are absolutely correct in that this stuff must stop. MD needs "shall-issue" concealed carry in the worst way. The current "may-issue" laws are ludicrous and crime levels in MD are absurd. Jason, research the Tueller Drill. This is a common self-defense concept and well-regarded by police and the courts. A knife is a lethal weapon according to the law. The Tueller Drill says a knife-wielding individual can cover 21 feet of ground in 1.5 seconds. This is typically much faster than most people can draw a firearm and and shoot a well-placed shot. You may consider reading some Massad Ayoob books. He's very good on self-defense teaching. As James corrected me, shoot to stop the threat and nothing more. Thanks.

Not ALL kids are little hoods in the making. I work as a Sub in Harford and Cecil counties and I have found tons of well behaved kids along with some that need a good lick in the butt every now and then but from the most part the kids I have come across are normal well behaved kids. I feel saying ALL kids from either 2 working parents or single parent families are bad kids is just wrong, I raised a a well behaved normal kid and was a single Mom and I knew of a kid that came from a Mom at home 2 parent family whose Dad did all the right things with him( baseball, football, scouts, church, etc) and he still turned out to be a drug using jerk. So you never know what is going to happen with a kid. You do your best and just hope your kid turns out right
Marie Weimer August 21, 2011 at 12:06 PM
I agree with you Gina :)
Reashell August 21, 2011 at 12:53 PM
To Dan, Jason, Alex and anyone else trying to relate the Seasons and government assisted individuals to ALL of these crimes, you all sound like idiots. CRIME HAPPENS EVERYWHERE! I'm actually ashamed of YOUR comments. At the same time, I PRAY that none of you have to experience any threatening situations in your current neighborhoods. I mean really, was it the Seasons residents that just committed that robbery at the Exxon Station a few weeks ago? Umm, nope! Was it Seasons residents that committed the rape in Thomas Run a few years ago? Umm, nope again! How about the hostage situation in the house right off 543 . . . was that the Seasons fault too? Hell no! So get off your high horses and get a clue! All you can do is take responsibility for yourselves, protect yourselves no matter where you are and be careful. I've lived in areas where one should be fearful. Believe me, the Seasons is No Where Close. I think reality is settling in that "perfect" Bel Air isn't so perfect after all and no one wants to see that reality . . .
HappieGrannie August 21, 2011 at 12:59 PM
I agree with Reashell. I used to work as a Certification Specialist for Section 8 Housing and I found 98% were hard working folks who needed a little help including a LARGE portion of elderly folks. Section 8 does not cause all the problems in the world it is just some bad people
JeffreyB August 21, 2011 at 03:48 PM
I have always believed that high taxes contribute to an increase in crime in multiple ways. 1. BOTH parents must work to pay their high tax bill and the parenting/rearing of children suffers for it. 2. Higher taxes means less jobs. A poor man never gave another man a job. Fewer available jobs accompanies an increase in crime.
Kari August 21, 2011 at 07:28 PM
1: Gilly....kids now and then need a lick in the butt?! Lmao jk 2: I am actually one of the young parents that teaches my children to respect everyone, to never put their hands on anyone and no one is to put their hands on my children, and always always always use manners!!!! It really plucks my nerves seeing kids and even adults being so rude!! If my children don't use their manners I will stop them mid sentence and say excuse me and they will apologize and start over using their manners!! And finally 3: Pizza Hut really needs to put cameras up inside and out!! I worked there a couple of years ago and heard all the kids talking about doing this!! So this has to be an inside job!! My opinion!!
Kris August 21, 2011 at 07:29 PM
I am a divorced mom who works and is going to school for nursing and I get compliments all the time about how well behaved and mannered my son is. Why, because I wouldn't have it any other way! To insinuate that children are bad because their mother's work is utter nonsense. I have seen plenty of children who belong to stay at home moms that are absolute monsters.
Marie Weimer August 21, 2011 at 07:35 PM
Congrats on going to nursing school, Kris.....Good luck to you. Nursing is a rewarding career :)
Kari August 21, 2011 at 07:38 PM
I agree with you Kris!! I'm a working mom and because of the tough times I'm looking for a part time job so that means everyone else watching the girls!! But everyone else does know how much of a freak I am about manners and they will also go along with me and have them use their manners so I really do not believe that working mothers has anything to do with how your children act!!

I am not sure I would call this a Communist state, but I agree that it is very Socialistic which isn't too far from being Communistic. The bottom line is our wonderful governor has well armed State Police protecting his butt. However, for us lowly peon taxpayers, we have to depend on 911 for an emergency provided the one you call isn't on a coffee break or snoozing. You're right that the states which allow permits for gun carrying to law abiding citizens are safer to live in. Think about it. Every country which has a dictatorship in control does not allow it's citizens to a gun of any type. Remember the Chinese uprising many years ago where the Chinese people tried to overthrow the Communist dictators? Those people had no weapons all all. Needless to say the overthrow attempt was a failure. How far would the American revolution succeeded if the citizens which were the militia not had guns? One last thing I would like to point out is that parents nowadays have to be afraid to correct their children for fear of the charge of child abuse and the children know that. The children don't respect any kind of authority. That is the kind of society we live in now.

The robber was 5'2 and 175 lbs... good lord! no wonder short fat dude wanted to rob a Pizza Hut, wonder how many pizzas he got away with...
Sharon P. August 21, 2011 at 08:25 PM
Ha ha Eric i was thinking the same thing. Not only is he a morally bankrupt jerk, he is an obese midget. Women must be banging his door down.

Im confused how Section 8 people somehow have something to do with it. I agee that some folks on the system are sketchy, but I worked in the Housing Office right on Main Street for almost 11 years now. Roughly 90% of all voucherfs holders are either elderly or disabled. Actually you cant get a voucher ( limited funding) anymore unless you are elderly or disabled. This has been since 2008. I would REALLY be afraid of those people in my opinion...lol. As long as building and more home kept being built, more people are going to live here, the population increases....and VIOLA....more crime. Its not about location. Its anout numbers. Increase people, you increase crime. Its math 101

to say that kids go bad because both parents work...so wrong. even growing up both my parents worked and my parents instilled in us values, morals, respect for others. for my 3 teens, i do the same, and even though their father doesn't live with them he too instills the same values, morals, beliefs. there are parents who don't and there are many more who do....but i will say i have seen kids of all kinds've parents turn out all kinds've ways. yes that includes those kids whose mom's stay at home, just because the mom chooses to stay at home doesn't mean the kids won't go bad....cause i've seen them go bad there too. No matter what kind've family they come from, the parents, relatives, friends all need to instill the values, morals, beliefs and live them by example every day. Kids/people make their choices and they have to live with their choices. we do have more violence and crime and it is so nice to hear about it finally from what some say the so-called good areas of harford county --- just that now we have media (ie patch) that gets it out their quickly. -- this wonderful thing of the internet allows people to quickly get info out to others. yes...more population moving in, squeezing in more homes of any type....there is going to be more crime.........and more media people that will respond to share the info of what is happening.
