Rash Decision: Towson Student Declares for Town Commissioner

A lifelong Bel Air resident said he will run for a position on the Board of Commissioners.

Max Rash said it’s time for his generation to step up, and he plans to lead the way.

The 21-year-old Major’s Choice resident declared his candidacy for town commissioner Tuesday in an interview with Patch. He has until Oct. 7 to officially register.

“I [want] to integrate the community with the commissioners,” Rash said. “I don’t feel as though have a very healthy, positive relationship with Bel Air citizens.”

The rising senior at Towson University graduated from College in 2010 and the School in 2008. He has lived in Bel Air his entire life and is a Long and Foster Real Estate agent.

But Rash said he will find time for the position, if elected.

“I do feel that I have the ability to positively multitask and make sure I’m spending equal time on all aspects of my life, personal and professional,” he said.

Self-described as a “very, very die-hard Republican,” Rash is not worried about his age.

“I understand that I’m young and I might have a lot to learn, but I do have a lot of energy and I do have a lot of will,” he said. “I think I could bring a new vibe to the town. A little bit more leadership.”

Rash said the commissioners should interact with the community more at events like holiday parades.

“The commissioners need to give a little bit more of, ‘What do you think?’” he said, “instead of putting on a front.”

Rash said he also plans to run for in his mid- to late-20s.

"Yes, that is in my near future," he said.

The Board of Commissioners is made up of five members who are elected to four-year terms. The terms are staggered with elections in November of odd-numbered years.

The seats of Terence Hanley, Edward Hopkins and Robert Reier will be open this fall. .

Any town resident who has lived in Bel Air for at least six months before the election and who is registered to vote can file as a candidate for commissioner.
